What happens at a dyslexia assessment with Dyslexia Coventry?
A dyslexia assessment with Dyslexia Coventry is a detailed, professional assessment that leads to a formal, recognised diagnostic report. The report can be used to support applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) at university and is also suitable for use in the workplace.
A dyslexia diagnosis does not expire. The report can be used throughout education and into adulthood and employment, without the need for reassessment.
Before the assessment
Before the assessment, I build a detailed background for each client. This includes information about health, educational history, strengths and current challenges. This is gathered through questionnaires and discussion.
For children and young people (under 16):
Parents or carers complete the questionnaires. With permission, I will also contact the school to review previous assessments and any support already in place.
For adults:
You will share your educational experiences, current challenges in work or study, and any strengths or difficulties you have noticed. This helps ensure the assessment is relevant to your everyday needs.
All clients must have had an eye test within the last 12 months before the assessment. A recent hearing test is recommended where possible. Referrals may come from GPs, schools, employers, or be self-referrals.
Most importantly, this is not a test to pass or fail. The purpose is to understand how you learn and what support will make things easier.
During the assessment
A full assessment usually takes 2–3 hours. Breaks are built in, and sessions can be split if needed.
I understand that assessment situations can feel daunting, particularly for individuals with dyslexia or other learning differences. My approach is calm, flexible and supportive. We start with a conversation so you feel settled, and I adapt the pace to suit you.
The assessment includes a range of structured tasks and activities looking at:
Reading, spelling and written language
Writing speed and handwriting
Memory, processing speed and language skills
For parents and carers of under-16s:
You are welcome to wait nearby during the assessment. Parking is available on the private driveway, and toilet access is provided.
The assessment is carried out in a supportive environment. I am fully qualified, DBS-checked, and my role is to understand and support — not to judge.
After the assessment
At the end of the session, I will talk through initial findings and answer any questions.
Within 2–3 days, you will receive a full written report. This includes:
A clear profile of strengths and areas of difficulty
Confirmation of dyslexia where identified
Practical, personalised recommendations for education, work and everyday life
Guidance on next steps and further support where appropriate
The report belongs to you. It can be shared with schools, colleges, universities, employers, education centres or your GP to help ensure the right support is put in place.
Sarah will complete the assessment in this room with the aim of making each client feel happy, comfortable and raring to go!
The price is lower to visit Sarah at her home and she can assess during evenings, weekends and school holidays.
